Making Beeswax Candle Tips – Candles with the Kids
The warm illuminating glow it emits. That deliciously fragrant smell as your candle fades. Sigh! The art of beeswax candlemaking is undeniably interesting and fun!
Making candles out of beeswax is a fun “hands on” activity for the little tykes. With this project, the children may stay as far away as possible from stoves and melting wax. There is no mess and the amount of items needed for making beeswax candles is just about nil.
Making Beeswax Candle Tips - Items that You Do Need
- 8 inch by 16 inch sheets of beeswax
- Primed wick sliced for a one inch candle
- A small paring knife from your kitchen
- Flat open surface
- Lay out your sheet of beeswax
- Slice wick approximately 3/4 inches longer than wax sheet (allowing excess on both sides of candle)
Leaving available wick at each ends allows you the choice to decide which side of the candle you prefer as the top and which side the bottom.
After laying the wick on the sheet’s edge, fold over an eighth of an inch of wax before you start rolling it. The wick will be be securely enclosed by this seam. While rolling the wax forward and having it circle the wick tightly with your finger tips, remember to push it from one side to another. This will be the only time at which you will place any hard pressure while you are making beeswax candle.
Another method to consider is by flipping it over then folding the wax down with a seam—approximately an eighth of an inch—by utilizing a cutting board or perhaps the corner of a counter. Whichever way works as long as you end up with a flawless seam.
In candle making, you need to determine how thick you’d wish your candle to be. The thicker you want, the more beeswax you will need to add. This is done by placing the extra sheet of wax edge to edge with the original & using your fingers to gently meld the pieces together. Rolling beeswax into a straight line can be tricky so make sure you only stop when it’s wrapped around itself completely.
With your thumbs, press the corners of the beeswax down softly upon reaching the end.As you continue working on other parts of the candle, imagine making a seam as you go.
Choosing what you consider the best end of the candle for the top, trim the wick 1/2 above the wax. For the rest of the wick, remove it starting from the base.
Your kids might not appreciate the finer parts of this project but you would. Go on and don’t let anyone stop your candle from burning as brightly as your achievement—breathe in its lovely scent and take pleasure in your work! But for kids? The end result — candles that your kids can proudly call their own!
And while you are learning to make wax candles keep in mind that the makings of candles have been here for centuries. Initially, having light was the primary goal…an all-important must at such situations. Most, however, view making candles as a pastime. There could be a number of other reasons for it. As cited earlier on, a lot of people look upon this project as a recreational pursuit. At times, they also make a wonderful gift on equally wonderful celebrations. A craft project like wax candle making is considered kid-friendly by most parents. Of course, let’s not forget about the money you could make. A number of individuals take up candle making for money-making purposes.
