I certainly don’t claim to be one of those guys that just has to keep his yard better looking than the neighbours. However, I do like to keep up with the yard work plus we do a bit of gardening.

Up until now the garage seemed to work just fine as a garden shed. I wasn’t allowed to drive when we purchase this home due to a heart attack so we just used the garage as our garden shed.

Now it’s a few years later, I am able to drive again and we plan to get another car shortly so the garage will actually start being used for what it was built for.

Having a garden shed will be so much better and I will make sure it is in a spot that get direct sunlight so I can use it as a nursery for my seedlings and other plants I start. The garage has one tiny little window that doesn’t get any real amount of light.

I think if I had built a garden shed when we first moved here it would have been way to small by this time as we have increased our gardening since we moved here and now we have a lot more tools and gardening gardening equipment. That means we would have had to add on an extension to the garden shed by now.

You are not limited to just growing flowers in a greenhouse, you can grow vegetables, ornamental plants and flowers as long as the growing conditions. Greenhouse gardening is a dream I have had for a few years.

For now our little greenhouse is in the basement and used to start plants for the next growing season. My dad built his own greenhouse once he retired from farming and moved away from the farm. He actually built the entire greenhouse from discarded windows.

He got them from people he knew that had upgraded the windows in their home. Once he was done and had all the trim painted it looked pretty cool and he was able to grow so much in that small space. I think that’s what got me interested in having my own hobby greenhouse.

What is a Greenhouse?

It can be pretty basic, as my dad has shown. Really it’s just a room or a shed with windows for walls and ceiling. This will allow the sunlight to come through, which is what plants and seeds need to grow strong, plus it keeps out the cold making it great for growing things before the really warm weather is here.

Dad would have every available spot growing something. He had hanging pots with pepper plants and ones with flowering plants so his greenhouse looked great any time he had it in use, which was so much longer than our gardening season is. Of course he had trays of start plants he started from seeds he would collect from his own plants each year. He was so good as saving money.

Sadly it took me so many years to realize he was a lot smarter than I gave him credit for. I remember he would have trays of plants that he would put on his little cart to put outside during the warmer parts of the day to acclimatize them to outdoor conditions.

I really can’t go wrong following in Dad’s foot steps so greenhouse gardening is on my mind a lot. When I look outside today it is -25 C and we have a foot or so of snow. It’s a long time until I can get out and start digging in the garden but with a greenhouse of my own it would be much sooner.

I also thought it would be kind of cool to be able to take some of my house plants that would never survive outdoors here and see how they would do in a hobby greenhouse.
